Of all the runes, Thorn/Thurisaz is without a doubt the most misunderstood. There are many who feel that the power of Thorn is intrinsically negative, equating its power to that of a demon. Nothing could be further from the truth. Thorn is arguably the most powerful rune in the futhark, strengthening any rune it may surround. Sure, if you have a series of negative runes surrounding Thorn, that power will be amplified, but the same holds true for the opposite. Thorn is a repository of pure, raw power. In the world of magicks, it has no alignment of its own, it only amplifies the intent of the person using it. I have worked with Thorn extensively (that's an understatement) throughout the past decade and I am fully aware of what that particular vibrational pattern is capable of.
First of all, Thorn deeply resonates with the power of telepathy, especially the aspect of telepathy associated with mind reading (receptive telepathy). The power of Thorn, in its physical aspect, is akin to the human power of the third eye. The exact location of its power, as it pertains to human physiology, lies between the conscious and unconscious mind. It is the bridge that links the manifested with the unmanifested. It is the desire of the self/ego amplified, awaiting a physical/vibrational act to imprint itself upon a subjective reality. This is the true reason why it is sometimes called "The Gateway".
Thorn is the understanding and linking of opposites: life and death, light and dark, good and evil, positive and negative, masculine and feminine, electric and magnetic. Thorn is the rune of the active mind and calls upon the self to act. It is the rune of infinite return and is at the core of magickal abilities. Its truest essence is that of transcendence, rising above duality and recognizing them as illusions. It is the intrinsic power hidden inside all of mankind.
